Working the Land

Light falling on fields and fences. Vertical shafts and angular lines played against the natural setting. Animals domestic and wild peering back at you (or bellowing in the fog). A snow-covered barn at sunset. Wildflowers by a stone wall. These images portray the simple, idyllic aspect of Connecticut farm country. But the hard work is lurking as well. In a classic style, black-and-white image, a Connecticut farmer aboard his tractor rakes the cut hay on a hilltop. “Make hay while the sun shines” is no joke in New England, where the growing season is short, and the soil less than perfect.
